Vernon, CT 06066, is located about 20 miles east of Hartford in Tolland County.  Located off exits 64 through 67 of Interstate 84, it is a town full of activity, culture, and activities for folks of all ages.

Founded in 1808, Vernon was famous for its mills, which used the water power of the Tankerhoosen and Hockanum Rivers.  The mills produced spun cotton or wool.  Until its closing in 1988, the Roosevelt Mill, on the north side of town, offered locals a great place to buy wool skeins or sweaters direct from the factory shop.

p6083373_1067Vernon has transitioned from the Mill Town of the 1800’s and early 1900’s to a suburban community with some open land for farming and a suburban community with good schools, activities, and culture.  It’s convenient access to I-84 east or west provides an amazing array of shopping, culture, outdoor activities and schools, all within a 20 minute trip.

There are 5 elementary schools, a middle school and a high school in Vernon.  There are also 2 elementary parochial schools in Vernon.  It is a 20 minute trip to UCONN or Manchester  Community College.  There are 3 major grocery stores in Vernon, with numerous shopping centers.

Many great restaurants abound in Vernon.  Beni’s has great outdoor dining. p6143534_800 Wood’n Tap is a great place to meet friends after work.  Pancho Loco is a great local Mexican Restaurant.  And of course, there is the famous Rein’s Deli, the place where people stop on their way between New York and Boston.  It is just the best darn deli food between Boston and New York.  Don’t miss it!

There is so much to do around town.  Vernon has Henry Park with a pool, sports fields and the spectacular view from the tower.  There is also the pool, sports field and Teen Center at Vernon 375.  Any time of the year, Valley Falls Park is a great place to visit.  With its pond for swimming and over 8 miles hiking trails, it is always a hub of activity.

p6143529_800Brand new! Vernon has just opened its Vernon Community Arts Center in the center of town at Route 30 and Center Road.  It features a multi-purpose performance space, gallery space, meeting rooms and classrooms.  This building is an amazing addition to Vernon’s amenities.
